Why six days matters

One morning in a clinic is a snapshot. This is the whole film.

Your stomach and intestines run on their own natural electrical rhythm, a bit like the heart. Most gut tests measure that system for a few hours, in a clinic, on one day, and in only one region. If your symptoms come and go, a single morning can easily miss them.

GutTracker takes the measurement to where your symptoms actually happen. Three small patches record quietly, day and night, while you eat your own food, sleep in your own bed, and go to work. Your doctor then sees how your gut behaved across the whole week, not one appointment.

If you have been through test after test without a clear answer, that does not mean nothing is happening. It may mean the measurements were not long enough to catch it. Recording over days is the difference this test is designed to make.

No fasting, no test meal

You eat your own food, on your own schedule.

Many gut tests begin with an overnight fast and a small, low-fat meal eaten in a clinic. GutTracker asks for neither. You eat what you normally eat, when you normally eat it, because the meals and the routines that bring on your symptoms are part of what the recording is meant to capture.

This matters more than it sounds. At Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, 48 adults wore the patches for up to six days, starting on the day of their standard emptying test. The researchers found that the conditions of a test day itself, the fast beforehand, a disrupted routine, and the stress of the appointment, may temporarily quiet the stomach's activity. They also noted that the small low-fat meal used in that test is not much like a real one. The research behind this.

How a study works
